Assignments, yay! *\o/* I am excited, and also paranoid. (Also, now completely distracted from the other exchanges I am supposed to be writing, fail fail fail.)

So anyway, it occurs to me that I should put up a Yuletide beta list! These are ranked by my ability to canon-pick.

Fandoms I know extremely well: )

Fandoms I'm familiar with: )

Fandoms I'm passing familiar with: )

I'm probably forgetting a lot of things, but if you think I might know something you're writing, just ask! &hearts

as I am taking a brief emotional health break from IBARW. (The post I planned is draining, is all; I shall recommence tomorrow.)

1. Have purchased and devoured Jaidani's SHADOW MAGIC, OMG! SO GOOD. SO SO GOOD. I MIGHT LOVE IT EVEN MORE THAN HAVEMERCY, FOR SRS. If any of you guys have read it, BRING ON THE SQUEE. :D SUBTEXT! SUBTEXT EVERYWHERE, IN LARGE AND SPARKLY LETTERS! (I am resisting [info]thremedon at the moment, as I don't want to accidentally spoil anybody.) Also, I have some flaily race-related thinky-thoughts (of the win variety) just waiting to emerge, so, y'know, let me know when more of you guys have read it! A party of one ain't a party. *g*

2. Also! I received a NYR story today: Deserving, by mechaieh! It's Haru wo Daiteita, and features Yoshizumi, and is just about making my life- outside of the aforementioned, anyway. ;)

PS- I have been failing MASSIVELY at reading things other than [info]ibarw lately, so please hurl your links at me: fic must-reads, personal posts, lulz, macros, music/picspams, rants, whatever. I promise I'll play catch-up after this week is over! &hearts

ETA: WIRELESS!FAIL, omg. Have been trying to post this for an hour.

ahahaha SCREWED. )

basically, brain, i'd like you to stop faffing off now plzkthx.

ETA: wow i am LATE on pimping this, but [info - personal]ciderpress has announced the 3rd edition of the Asian Women Carnival! \o/ \o/ the host is Jha'Meia, and the submissions post is here; deadline is 8/15; optional theme is "Intersections between Culture and Sexism."

also, a note from [info - personal]ciderpress regarding the Carnival (emphasis mine):
The carnival was intended to be *about* Asian women rather than an Asian women *only* carnival. This is partly because the global issues of race, identity, gender and class etc affect everyone and I think it is important to explore and discuss (and learn about) the intersection of communities, issues and common and uncommon experiences and listen to a diverse range of voices, all of which have valuable things to contribute to the discussion. It is also partly because Asian women are daughters, mothers, sisters, colleagues and friends. What affects our lives and makes us who we are in turn affects our relationships with our brothers and sisters, our parents, our children, our colleagues and our friends and changes them. I know I have things to say about my identity as an Asian woman. I also know that my brothers, my father and my friends all think about and have things to say about Asian women and how we relate to their own personal experiences and their views on race, gender and feminism etc. I personally welcome submissions and work by Asian women, Asian men and non-Asian allies, and hope that the conversations springing from the AWC can and will include all these voices, even within the narrow focus that the carnival has. I would also like, as both [info - personal]yeloson and [info - personal]deepad have both kindly suggested, in a (hopefully soon-to-be!) future edition, to have an Asian Women Carnival based on the theme of Asian men and children.

if you, lovely flist, have any thoughts to share, i'd love to hear them! &hearts

it is beautiful outside after yesterday's all-day Rain of Doom, so have a list of happy things:

- [info - personal] karanguni is killing me with Reboot goodness these days: New, and Stumbling Forward! &hearts &hearts &hearts SPOCK. LOVE. THAT IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.
- i spent, uh, all of last night/this morning mainlining Darker than Black! MADE. OF. AWESOME. and also, OMG HEI &hearts &hearts &hearts *GLEEFACES* if any of you guys have watched the anime, BRING ON THE SQUEE. :D

01. FIRST THINGS FIRST! i have pimped this one already, but seriously, guys- if you have not read [info - personal] karanguni's awesome Reboot!fic of awesome, you should totally get on that RIGHT. NOW: To The Enterprise: of Warp Barriers, Captains, and Other Scary Things. Scotty! Spock! Kirk! Chekov &hearts! fans of ensemble-fic and/or the science/engineering-type geekery, eat your heart out. :D

02. watched Angels & Demons last night, which was pleasantly entertaining, if necessarily more graphic than the DaVinci Code. Ewan McGregor = best casting choice ever for the camerlengo, yum. &hearts :D i wasn't as absorbed in it as i was in the DaVinci Code, probably because Angels & Demons was a more interesting book than the DaVinci Code and i therefore remembered more plot points, etc. still, it was a good movie; i'd definitely watch it again, though i wouldn't pay money to do so. *g*

03. adding to the reclist because i had an episode of book!glee yesterday, thanks to [info - personal] yasaman's recent mention of Santa Olivia )

speaking of my reclist, some other books i forgot to add: )

how are you guys faring this week?

SWORDSPOINT HAS ARRIVED! *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* am off to devour it shortly (along with Fall of the Kings and Privilege of the Sword when i'm finished), so you may not see me until i'm done reading, and possibly rereading. *g* i fully expect to be flailing when i'm finished!

before i go, some completely unrelated news:

01. the lovely [info]ciderpress has announced the second edition of the Asian Women Blog Carnival! submissions are now officially open! \o/ [info]oyceter will be the host for this round; the link to her submission post is up on the AWBC wordpress site. (if you haven't read the stuff from the first round, the site also has a link to that.)

02. i read two great posts today- an essay on whether The Devil Wears Prada is a feminist manifesto, by [info]thelastgoodname, and a post by [info]setissma regarding stereotypes about women and math. definitely, absolutely worth reading!

okay, PSAs are done for today; book-glee commences NOW. &hearts!

i'm sure you've all encountered my giant reclist already, but i've realized recently that i keep forgetting the books you guys have suggested to me! so, in the interests of keeping a to-read list that even i can't lose, and in hopes that i will actually read some new things in addition to rereading my old favorites, please feel free to toss any authors, titles, or series that you can come up with my way. call it a Chinese New Year's resolution. :)

(oh yeah, and just so you know, i've already put Swordspoint and Melusine on that list, as they've been recommended to me multiple times. *g*)

also, i won't be around much this weekend, thanks to dance practice, Chinese New Year's festivities, and last-minute ski plans, so have a good one, everyone! &hearts

ETA 3/18/09: Ave's recs:
- Italo Calvino: if on a winter's night a traveller
- China Mieville: Perdido Street Station, The Scar, Un Lun Dun

so i finally caved and went to Barnes & Noble, and proceeded to devour Godchild 6-8 in the two hours i was there- i'm going to need a good long squee about it at some point, hope you all won't mind! :D- and ALSO ALSO ALSO

i bought Havemercy. YOU NEED TO READ THIS, GUYS. whether or not you are a fan of the Shoebox Project, you have to admit that [info]ladyjaida (and [info]danibennett!) is one hell of a fantastic storyteller. i'm going to save my more specific flailing for some other time, since it's only been out for a week, but: metal dragons + slashy, slashy goodness of the fangirl-feeding variety (of course, it being a novel written by fellow fen) + FABULOUS STORY = what's not to like? :D

01. hangama '07 was today! aka the pakistani mock wedding. i will perhaps give an actual explanation/recap later on, but suffice it to say that i'm listening to this year's mix on repeat. &hearts it's a little inexpertly cut, but still... :D

02. omg. i just looked at my remix, and. holy shit. i just. my original story was just a throwaway bunny (or rather several R/S getting-together throwaway bunnies combined), but i clicked on it and got veil!sirius, and there is so much overarching meta commentary that could be drawn from this, and... omfg. i am SO in love with my remixer right now. *ADORES* thank you!

03. yesterday's book vomit, it appears, isn't quite over yet! *g* so, addendum number 1: to the reclist of doom )

so, a ten-word recap of the wedding today: arrived at 9:30; squawked. much food. left at 4:45. POOPED.

mock pakistani wedding tomorrow! \o/

also, as i recall [info]wanderlight asking for book recs, my squeeful booklist of joy:

cut for the monster reclist of DOOM )

*rereads*

well. now you know that i devoured my public library by author as well as by genre (and also, my evident fairytale kink). i know i'm missing some good things, but i'll come back and add as i think of them, yeah?
